A Family Session Under the Willow Tree in Elk Grove
Some sessions just feel like a love letter to a family. This one? Definitely that.
We set up under the most stunning weeping willow — the kind of tree that practically begs to be photographed — with soft drapes catching the breeze and a little basket of baby's breath tucked nearby. The whole setup felt like a daydream, but what made it really sing was the family in front of the lens.
Mom and daughter showed up in matching cream dresses (and yes, my heart did a thing), while Dad rounded out the trio in a crisp white shirt and dark jeans. Coordinated without being matchy-matchy — that sweet spot I'm always pushing clients toward. But here's what I love about this family: the second I asked them to relax and just be, they did. Real laughter. Real squeezes. Their daughter throwing herself onto Mom's lap, giggling so hard her eyes squeezed shut. Dad sneaking a kiss while their little girl rested her head on Mom's lap, completely unbothered. That's the stuff. That's what you'll look back on in twenty years.
If you've been around here for a while, you know this is what I live for. Not stiff, say-cheese portraits — but the real, messy, beautiful in-between moments. The twirls. The whispered jokes. The kiss on the cheek that wasn't planned. Family sessions in the greater Sacramento area are some of my favorites because every family I work with brings their own rhythm, and my job is just to catch it.
We even snagged a few solo moments of their daughter holding a little bouquet of baby's breath — and let me tell you, the quiet confidence in that smile? Pure magic. These are the photos parents print big and hang on the wall. The ones grandparents tear up over.
